Understanding Financial Management and where budgeting fits into the bigger picture

Benefits & Outcomes

• Understanding the importance of financial statements, and the linking of financials to effective budgeting and forecasting
• Understanding the methodologies available to assess investments in capacity. Calculating the minimum return required for a company (WACC), and using this return rate as a mechanism to evaluate capital investments
• How financial ratios assist in the formulation of realistic forecasting, using marketing as well as the critical financial statement ratios
Using the balanced score card to link strategy to budgets; including strategic outcomes in the KPA’s of managers to ensure focus on strategy
• Knowing what the minimum revenue numbers have to be to just survive, and how to extrapolate revenue numbers to achieve profit targets
Forecasting sales and gross profit with consideration towards all the various internal and external factors that are relevant to the forecast
• How to optimise the organisation’s budgeting ability to anticipate possible changes in revenues and return in times of fluctuation due to economic and political factors

Alex Nortje

Mr. Nortje has tutored for The Open University on the MBA curriculum. Subjects tutored in are Financial Strategy, Change Management, Managing Company Resources, assisting with specific courses and lectures at UNISA residential schools. He has been appointed as a contract lecturer at Varsity College during the last 3 years, covering subjects such as: Basic Principles of Computers, Computer Studies, (covering Pastel, Microsoft Excel and Word), Management Accounting and Finance, Marketing Statistics, Introduction to Accounting as well as Introduction to Marketing.
